Women and Trade in the Americas

The SRC is pleased to announce that is has successfully concluded the Training Module  Course:  Women and Trade in the Americas held online from 22 November to 2 December 2021.  The course, organized by the WTO Chairs of Barbados, Mexico and Chile, was made possible by funding provided under the WTO Chairs Programme.  It brought together 35 students from Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, Kenya, Senegal, Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica.  The course introduced the concepts and definitions of feminism, gender, and gender policies; provided an overview of the numbers and the impact of trade on women from economic, social and political perspectives; reviewed how gender is being “mainstreamed” into WTO members’ policies through international, regional and bilateral trade and investment agreements; evaluated trends relating to the participation of women in specific sectors; highlighted ways in which regional and international organizations are promoting the women and trade agenda. The course also was lectured by persons from a wide field of expertise – from Ministers of government, to heads of regional and international organizations, academics, researchers, negotiators and practitioners.  The edited version of the course will be made available on the SRC website and WTO Chairs Programme website.

The course was facilitated by SRC Director, Dr Jan Yves Remy (UWI),  Dr. Renata Amaral (Adjunct Professor at American University, Washington D.C.) and Dr. Daniele Bobb (Lecturer, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados) and supported by Mr Jamaine Atwell (UWI Student) who provided online and IT assistance.
